What We Do
Strengthening response to violence
MIFUMI strengthens Africa wide response to violence and abuse against women and children by enhancing joint advocacy work and survivor support in the tripartite partnership between MIFUMI (UK and Uganda) and Masisikumeni in South Africa. The organization addresses critical factors, which underscore the public and private divide, undermine women's and children's participation and social inclusion and subvert states' responsibilities for the fulfillment of their obligations.
We do this through:
Survivor led social mobilization to enact the message about the social/economic/legal and human rights costs and implications of violence and abuse against women and girls to the family, community and society at large.
Enhanced legal empowerment of survivors to increase the quality of information and skills, advice and support available to survivors of domestic violence.
Advocacy for improved policy and practice through work with survivors, duty bearers and the informal sector to enlist their involvement in breaking the vicious cycle of hopelessness and increasing survivors' choices and opportunities of realizing justice within traditional and local authority setting, and the criminal justice system setting and to influence enactment of appropriate legislation.
Exchange visits and networking to increase shared learning, survivor confidence, and facilitate technical and training exchanges and apprenticeship for survivors, staff and volunteers through and exchange and networking programme.
These activities are sponsored by
Comic Relief
under the Domestic Violence III project running January 2004 - December 2008.
